A press briefing was held at New Scotland Yard today, 23 September, in connection with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq in Green Lane, Edgware on Thursday, 16 September.

DCS Neil Basu, Borough Command for Brent, said:

“Can I first thank you all for coming today.

“It is now exactly a week since Dr Imran Farooq was found suffering from stab wounds and head injuries outside his home in Green Lane, Edgware.

“Fifty-year-old Dr Farooq was on his way home from work when he was attacked shortly before 5.30pm on Thursday, 16 September.

“Detectives investigating the attack are keeping an open mind as to the motive behind the attack.

“Dr Farooq’s murder has shocked the Edgware, Pakistani and Muslim communities and I would like to reassure everyone that detectives are doing all they possibly can to catch those responsible.

“The attack happened in the heart of a strong Jewish community and I would also like to thank them for their understanding at this very important time of the year.

“Later today, officers will again be in and around Green Lane appealing for witnesses and speaking to people who may have been in the area at the time of the attack.

“It is vitally important that anyone with information should contact the police incident room on 020 8721 3784 or alternatively contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“As you can appreciate this is the most difficult time for Dr Farooq’s family, but his wife Shumaila Imran has come here today to make a personal appeal for witnesses.”

Appeal by Shumaila Imran, widow of Dr Imran Farooq:

“Today I want to make my own personal appeal for help in catching the people who killed my husband Dr Imran Farooq.

“Dr Imran Farooq was a dedicated family man, a loving father and loving husband.

“His murder a week ago has devastated me and left our family in a state of shock and disbelief.

“My husband was on his way home from work when he was set upon and attacked.

“I want to appeal today for anyone who has any information about the attack on Imran to come forward and tell the police what they know.

“Someone, somewhere knows something about my husband’s murder.

“It doesn’t matter how insignificant this information may seem to you – it could be absolutely vital to the police investigation.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me and my family and sent us their best wishes and condolences.

“I would also like to thank the police for their help and support during this very difficult time.

“Thank you for coming today.”
