US threatens TikTok ban
The Wall Street Journal has reported that the US government is threatening to ban the popular app TikTok if its Chinese owners, ByteDance, do not sell their interests. This marks a hardening of the US stance towards the app, which has been a concern for years.
TikTok has faced criticism for allowing some employees to access data from users in the US and Europe, and has been banned in some countries due to fears of espionage.
TikTok has denied that the Chinese government has or ever will have access to user data, and has said that a sale would not solve the concerns about national security. However, sources suggest that TikTok is considering separating from ByteDance. The app has more than 100 million users in the US, with two out of three users being teenagers.
