The Real Reason Everyone In Hollywood Is Wearing Fuchsia Lipstick Color

There’s a lot more to red lipstick than vanity. Elizabeth I wore the shade to assert her rule over 16th century England… and years later, 16,000 suffragettes swept it on before marching for their rights.

But it looks like modern-day feminists are trying on another power shade for size: fuchsia. We first spotted the color on Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Storm Reid, and Mindy Kaling on TIME’s latest cover, and now we can’t stop seeing it. From Daisy Ridley to Tracee Ellis Ross, it feels like every woman in Hollywood is suddenly wearing it — and it holds a lot more meaning than you think.

Like the Pink Pussy Hats worn at the Women’s March earlier this year, the color is feminine and powerful — and that’s entirely the point. “Pink is considered a very female color representing caring, compassion, and love – all qualities that have been derided as weak but are actually STRONG,” the founders of the Pussy Hat Project wrote. “Wearing pink together is a powerful statement that we are unapologetically feminine and we unapologetically stand for women’s rights.”

Whether you do it with a hat or a lipstick, now’s the time to wear a shade that screams, “Listen Up!” Let the celebrities ahead be your inspiration.

Ah, the TIME magazine cover that started it all. Contrary to popular opinion, we’ve been told that all four women are wearing different lip shades. “The photographer requested that all the women be in a strong fuchsia red,” Witherspoon’s makeup artist Molly Stern tells Refinery29. “All four makeup artists took to their kits and palettes to create the perfect color that matched each other and their clients’ skin tones.”

For the record, Stern used Elizabeth Arden’s Beautiful Color Moisturizing Lipstick in Ultra Violet. Mylah Morales, who worked on Reid’s makeup, tells us she used NARS Power Matte Lip in Give It Up. (We’ve reached out to Winfrey and Kaling’s makeup artists as well, and will update this post when we hear back.)

It makes sense that Rose McGowan, 2017’s uncontested Champion of Women, would choose to also pack a punch with her lipstick. The activist, actress, and director has made it crystal clear that she is done staying silent — and wants everyone to hear the words coming out of her (fuchsia-colored) mouth.

Further proof that the fuchsia lip works on all skin tones: this photo of actress Olivia Munn, posted by makeup artist Patrick Ta. In a recent interview with Byrdie, Munn said that it was Ta’s ability to tailor her makeup to suit her individual needs and skin tone that inspired her to work with him. “Being multicultural has affected my definition of beauty, the way I see beauty, and how I feel beautiful tremendously,” Munn, who’s half Chinese, told the publication. “Over the last year, I actually started working with Patrick Ta, who is an Asian-American makeup artist, and that’s when I really appreciated how makeup can transform you in different ways.”

Yara Shahidi’s glossy take on the fuchsia lip trend is one of our favorites, especially with her matching smoky eye.

A lip color fitting for the female lead of one of the world’s biggest movie franchises. “I can’t stop looking at her,” one Instagram user commented on makeup artist Mai Quynh’s post of Daisy Ridley’s bold lips. Another wrote, “Omg, speechless.” Same.

Tracee Ellis Ross continues to be our favorite person to follow on Instagram, especially after posting this fire fuchsia selfie.

If anyone in the world could convince you to screw the rule that you should only play up one feature with makeup — either your eyes, lips, brows, or cheeks — it’s Lily Collins. In this shot posted to celebrity makeup artist Fiona Stiles’ Instagram, she’s doing it all… and DGAF what you think about it.

A slightly subtler twist on the bold shade, Priyanka Chopra makes fuchsia lipstick (and matching eye shadow) look easy.
