Congress vice president, Rahul Gandhi, and West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, attacked PM Modi’s demonetisation drive in a joint press conference and called the scheme a scam that had pushed the “nation 20 years back.” During a media briefing in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi mentioned that “PM Modi said by 30th, everything will be fine. But the situation is as it is and there has been no relief to the people.” Whereas, Banerjee alleged that the demonetisation scheme was anti-poor and it had pushed the country to starvation.

In his remarks, Rahul pointed out that “PM decided on note ban on November 8 and promised to root out corruption and black money. However, there was no effect on black money and corruption.” According to Rahul, “demonetisation was neither effective nor was targeted well.” In the press conference, the duo stressed that the note ban was an attack on people’s financial independence and that the unemployment rose to highest level in 60 years due to demonetisation. Rahul pointed out that “Modi promised that everything will be alright after December 30. Its 47th day right now and nothing has changed..So first of all demonetisation is a complete failure..PM should answer now… who is responsible for the problems people faced.”

In addition to the demonetisation scheme, Rahul also reiterated his criticism on the 2013 IT raids at the Aditya Birla group office and the documents seized from Sahara. He demanded that the “BJP should also answer on the documents seized from Aditya Birla group office and Sahara.”
