Air Canada has confirmed in a statement that a 10-year-old girl on board flight AC 868 from Toronto to London suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight and failed to survive afterward. The flight took off from Pearson International Airport at 8:50 a.m. on Saturday but it had to be diverted to the town of Shannon, Ireland, before it could reach its destination at London Heathrow due to the girl’s ill health.

The statement issued by Air Canada representative confirmed that the 10-year-old girl died after suffering a cardiac arrest while on board an Air Canada flight from Toronto to London Heathrow. It was explained that the child was tended to by a doctor and a nurse during the flight and then immediately rushed to a nearby hospital after the landing in Ireland. However, she failed to survive the attack and was pronounced dead soon after. Air Canada has stated that “we are deeply saddened by this situation and we are doing all we can to assist the family in these tragic circumstances.”

According to RTE, the child was traveling with three adult siblings. It has been reported that a post-mortem examination is being arranged. However, both Air Canada and the Canadian government have failed so far to confirm whether the girl was a Canadian national or not. After making a stopover in Ireland, the aircraft continued its journey and it has since arrived at its final destination, London Heathrow.
