Infighting and resentment in UP Congress over distribution of tickets for the assembly elections came to the fore in Bahraich on Wednesday, just before Rahul Gandhi was to address a rally on the second day of his UP tour.
Supporters of district Congress president Jitendra Singh and Congress candidate Chandrashekhar Singh ‘Azad’ clashed at the rally ground. Jitendra Singh’s supporters were protesting against Chandrashekhar being given a ticket, saying he was an ‘outsider’.
The scuffle happened just before Rahul Gandhi was to arrive at the rally venue and Congress leaders tried hard to underplay the event. Gandhi’s five-day tour of UP, which started on Tuesday, has seen repeated protests and clashes among local party leaders over ticket distribution.
On Monday, Congress workers stopped Gandhi’s cavalcade at the Lucknow airport, even before he was to embark on his tour, in protest against denial of ticket to state Congress spokesperson Subodh Srivastava from Lucknow Central. The ticket was given to party-hopper and local toughie Fakir Siddiqui, which Congress old-timers resent.
At Gandhi’s first rally in Barabanki, supporters of union steel minister Beni Prasad Verma and SC/ST Commission chairman PL Punia had a minor scuffle. The two leaders are at loggerheads since Barabanki is the hometown of Verma and the Lok Sabha constituency of Punia.
