The Ministry of Education of Singapore announced some changes to be made to the Edusave Awards for higher education. A new award under the program has been proposed which aims at awarding the character of students other than academic progress.

The announcement was made in the Singapore parliament on Thursday by the Minister of Education Heng Swee Keat. He said that it was important to appreciate students with moral and character values which account for a major part of our future society. Thereby, a new award will be given out from now on which is Edusave Character Award. It aims at giving recognition to students with exemplary values.

The award will be distributed by the educational institutes and the Institute of Tertiary Education. It will be given to 10,000 students will unique values who will receive gift money of $200 to $500 each.

Announcing the award, Mr. Heng said, “To be future-ready, education must develop the whole person. It is less about content knowledge, as content will have to be re-learnt and even un-learnt during one’s lifetime. It is more about how to process information, discern truth from untruth, connect seemingly disparate dots, and create knowledge as the context changes. It is developing an enduring core of competencies, values and character to anchor our young and ensure they have the resilience to succeed.”
