The Opposition Congress has announced to stage statewide protest against the gang-rape of a Swiss woman on Monday. The call for protest came after Madhya Pradesh police detained six accused in the case. State Congress president Kantilal Bhuria will stage a protest in Bhopal and the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Ajay Singh will stage a sit-in at Datia.

“We have arrested six accused persons who raped the Swiss woman and recovered her mobile,” said SM Afzal, IG, Chambal Range.

The arrested men, identified as Baba, Bhutha, Rampro, Gaza alias Brajesh, Vishnu Kanjar and Nitin Kanjar, have confessed committing the crime. The incident took place on Friday night when the Swiss tourist, on a cycling trip along with her husband, was allegedly gang-raped at a forest area in Datia district. The victim received immediate treatment at a medical facility in Gwalior. Reportedly, the couple has left Madhya Pradesh and reached the Swiss embassy in Delhi.

“A decision regarding the next steps… in the interest of the two concerned Swiss citizens will be made with them in due course,” a spokesman for the Swiss ministry for foreign affairs said in a statement.

The incident comes three months after the gang-rape of a 23-year-old female student. The later incident took place on December 16, when the victims boarded the bus at Munirka in south Delhi and were robbed, stripped and thrown out of the bus some 40 minutes later. The young Indian girl succumbed to her injuries and died in a Singapore hospital.

In the wake of the incident, thousands of people protested on the streets. The news became the highlight of international media. Celebrities and other influential figures also joined in to demand justice and ensure safety of women in India.
