Two more bodies from refugee boat southern Italy

Two weeks after a shipwreck claimed the lives of numerous refugees off the coast of southern Italy, two additional bodies, including that of a child, were discovered on the beach on Sunday. The accident’s death toll now stands at 78, with 32 of the fatalities being minors.

The Italian Coast Guard was able to rescue 79 individuals from the water, while others were able to make their way to shore independently. Due to the boat’s unknown passenger count, there may be additional casualties.

In inclement weather, the wooden vessel collided with a rock while attempting to land near the Italian town of Crotone. The boat has since disintegrated.

Those aboard hailed from countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria, Iraq, and Iran, among others. The boat had left Turkey several days prior.

Three smugglers have been apprehended by Italian authorities and are suspected of having been involved in the migrants’ journey.

Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, has urged the European Union to take steps to prevent the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. Her right-wing administration is also tightening immigration restrictions. Among other things, Italy limits the operations of aid organizations that perform sea rescues.
