police seeks public help to find person behind wwii anti-tank rocketsEssex Police have made a public appeal to seek help in finding the suspect who left six highly explosive anti-tank rockets from World War II in woodland. Although police initially misjudged the explosives as grenades, it later confirmed that the rounds were first discovered by dog walkers close to Epping Road in Coopersale at 4.55pm on Tuesday.

Soon after the discovery, an army bomb disposal unit attended the scene and took the live Second World War rounds to a field off Woodside, in North Weald, where they were detonated. 36-year-old William Aldis, who owned the field where the rockets were exploded, filmed the explosion and said that “I was standing 150 yards away and it was really loud, a big bang. I would have been worried for someone else if I was not there.” He added that “if they were in the hands of somebody unpleasant, they would have made a right mess of a large building.”

Whereas on the other hand, the dog walker who discovered the rockets, 45-year-old Lisa Croft, revealed that “we were walking the dog and the dog ran off to do her exploring so we followed,” adding that “we looked and we could see this box sitting by a tree and we looked at what was inside.” She explained that “it was really rusty, but there were what looked like mortars inside and they weren’t rusty. We phoned the police and they were brilliant, they arrived in minutes and then we went on our way.” She alleged that “we have walked there a million times and never seen anything, it was only because of the dog going there,” boasting that “we probably saved some damage!”
