report highlights ndp lost due to weak pitch to votersA team led by NDP president, Rebecca Blaikie has presented its findings on why the party fell so far behind its competitors after spending seven months travelling the country. The report released on Thursday morning also includes recommendations for the party to create better conditions for the next vote in 2019.

The report highlighted that the NDP’s poor performance in last year’s election campaign was a result of failures at multiple levels but the major factors included lack of a strong and simple narrative and the fact that they were ill prepared for a debate about a Muslim face covering. The report claims that “we failed to represent the kind of change that Canadians desired,” adding that “instead our campaign presented a choice for cautious change.”

According to the report, the campaign was “not nimble” in responding to attacks by other parties as many members of the party failed to understand why Leader Tom Mulcair refused to participate in some debates. It was also highlighted that the party was inadequately prepared for the debate on the niqab. Mr. Mulcair has stressed that niqab issue was the defining moment of his political career and that he does not apologize for standing firm on what he believes to be a matter of human rights. Whereas, the report points out that “while members are proud of our principled position, many questioned why the campaign was unprepared for the intensity of the debate and lacked a plan to shift campaign coverage back to our offer for Canadians.”
