scotland police crisis gets real, over 800 in workforce quitA staggering report has revealed that merger of the country’s eight regional forces three years ago has triggered a massive number of constables to walk away from their jobs. The report citing data received under freedom of information laws claims that 758 constables, 42 sergeants, 10 inspectors and seven chief inspectors have resigned from their position.

According to a survey of Police Scotland and Scottish Police Authority employees conducted last year, one third of the workforce plans to leave it within three years. Whereas more than half of the respondents shared that changes to pension arrangements was the main reason behind their decision, with others saying they feel undervalued, lack necessary resources, feel pressure in their job and are unhappy about their work-life balance. In addition to that, there have also been growing reports of high and alarming absence rates in command and control centers.

Whereas on the other hand, bosses are also being criticized for Police Scotland’s recruitment and retention of female police officers. The general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, Calum Steele, explained that “the only reaction I can genuinely express is one of astonishment,” explaining that “in excess of 800 officers leaving the service through resignation is an astronomic number but clearly they do point to some significant issues the service needs to identify and address.” It was highlighted that “of course, it’s possible that morale was a consideration but I would be more concerned if the historic problem that the police service had in retaining women officers was a significant contributing factor in these numbers.”
