Sources have confirmed that the RCMP warned both police and military to keep an eye out for terrorists in light of recent serious threats by the Islamic State (ISIS). The notice issued on Monday alerted police and military to remain extremely vigilant and exercise caution upon starting their shifts this week. Montreal, Quebec City and several other police forces have confirmed to have received the RCMP advisory.

Montreal police sources have further alleged to have held top-level meetings with the RCMP this week. It was highlighted that the RCMP warning is specifically aimed at police on solo patrols, who have been deemed to be at greatest risk. According to Quebec’s Public Security minister Lise Theriault, the RCMP advisory follows an earlier threat from ISIS. Previously an ISIS spokesman, Muhammad Al-Adnani, called on all followers to kill Canadians and others by various means including to “slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car” in September.  Theriault stated that citizens and police should keep their eyes open for threats, adding that “I think that vigilance will always be appropriate.” She urged citizens to call police if they believe someone has become radicalized or if they see violent Internet postings.

So far two Canadian soldiers have lost their lives to homegrown extremists. A National War Memorial guard, Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, was shot in the back and killed Oct. 22 while a Warrant Officer, Patrice Vincent, was run over by a car and killed near a recruiting office in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que.
