Police have confirmed the death of two adults and a child in an apartment fire in Les Coteaux on Tuesday morning. Officials confirmed that firefighters called on to tackle the blaze at a home found five family members unconscious inside. It was explained that the fire started in the Montéregie municipality, i.e. about 60 kilometres west of Montreal, at around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Authorities confirmed that a total of five family member were present in the home at the time, including a 37-year-old man, 32-year-old woman, their 2 and 9 year old boys and a four-year-old girl. The rescue call was made by their grandmother living downstairs in the same building. The two boys injured from the incident were first shifted to a local hospital and then transferred to Ste-Justine Hospital in Montreal. However, the children’s parents and the four-year-old girl died.

A neighbour living in the apartment building for the last year, Nicole Ménard, alleged to have known the entire family well. Ménard stated that “it’s like a nightmare,” adding that “my place is still intact, it’s as if nothing happened.” Ménard claimed to have woken up in the middle of the night by a stranger who told her to leave the building. She alleged that the rest is kind of a blur. Upon inquiry about the timing of the incident, she said there’s no way to make sense of it. She said that it “doesn’t matter what day it happened on,” because “it’s just a tragedy.”
