An eight-year-old boy survived a two storey fall inside his residence and police are warning other caregivers of this potentially fatal accident scenario.

On Friday January 28, 2011 at approximately 7 p.m. officers from West Division responded to a residence in the Whites Road and Finch Avenue area of Pickering for an accident involving a young boy who had fallen over a handrail of an open, spiral staircase and sustained serious injuries. The child was at home with his mother and two other siblings when he peered over the railing and lost his balance, falling two stories from the second floor of the residence and landing on the basement floor below.

EMS arrived to scene and transported the boy to a Toronto trauma hospital where he is being treated for serious but non-life-threatening head injuries.

Durham Police would like to remind homeowners to not modify stairwell railings and banisters which might jeopardize the safety of persons using this household equipment. The investigation is closed and police have not charged the homeowner.
