Stephen Mateo’s first novel about a father’s harrowing escape from tyranny
Los Angeles-based Canadian writer Stephen Mateo returns to his Toronto hometown for the Canadian launch of his moving and inspirational first novel, Journey.
Available online at amazon.ca and chapters.indigo.ca, Journey is the riveting true story about Stephen Mateo’s father, Tomas Mateo Castellano, and his harrowing escape to build a new life in Canada and the secret he kept from his family almost his entire life.
Journey tells the story of 17-year old Tomas living in Franco’s fascist Spain where soldiers trained by Hitler roam the streets killing anyone suspected of disloyalty to the Franco regime. Torn between his family and his dream to be free from tyranny, Tomas makes a life-changing decision that will affect the ones he loves forever. Hopping in a small sailboat owned by a General of Franco’s Civil Guard, Tomas and a friend secretly embark on a journey to America in search of freedom and a better life. The story follows their extraordinary adventure and their struggle for survival as well as the suffering a family goes through after waking up to find their son has disappeared.
