The venue at Niagara Fallsview Casino Convention Center was a hub of activity and participants had gathered from all over the country/world to hear and discuss the latest in the world of alternative investments. In its 11th successful year, WAISC has been consistently bringing in high quality of content and speakers to this financial forum for alternative investments. The headliners for this summit were no less spectacular than the previous years with speakers like Dr. Philippa Malmgren, President and Founder of Prinicipalis Asset Management based in London and who has also served as advisor to the White House. Dr. Malgren spoke on Politics, Policy and Geo politics. In addition, there was another much anticipated speaker – Ms. Rebecca McCaughrin who is Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund in the Global Markets Division. The convention was filled with very timely forums and panel discussions on topics such as Canada’s Alternative Investment Roundtable- Trends, Flows and Opportunity, The value of Hedge Fund Industry in Canada, The Canadian Exempt Market Outlook, ETFs – Traditional Indexing and Beyond, Real Assets: Infrastructure, MICs, REITs, Real Estate and Land, Energy Outlook 2012, Canadian and Global Regulatory Hot Topics, Recent Development in Fund Administration and Transparency. The participants and speakers were well known and respected in their areas of expertise from Canada, USA and beyond – from Cayman Islands, and England. The panels had excellent content for all those who are involved or want to get into the alternative investment market, hedge funds or exempt markets. One of the interesting panels on ETFs had Vikash Jain VP of Archer ETF Portfolio Management. Vikash is a frequent speaker on BNN Market Call and as well as contributor to the National Post along with ETF Insight’s Managing Editor Yves Rebetez and Pat Chiefalo.
The convention is a gem of an opportunity to network with the best of the best and every year draws class sponsors with unique programming to include a wine tour and lunch or golf tournament and a grand reception as an ice breaker. It is a complete day packed with informative and interactive sessions and content is always well chosen and relevant to the times.
The 3-day conference ended with keeping the best for the last – the speaker, Mr. Lawrence McDonald who is author of the well known book on the fall of the Lehman Brothers, A Colossal Failure of Common Sense: The Inside Story of the Collapse of Lehman Brothers. He details his experiences as a Vice- President at Lehman brothers and provides a behind the scenes look at the collapse which led to one of the greatest financial crisis of our times. He spoke about Global Economic Outlook 2012 and Beyond What the European Debt Crisis Means for Global Markets. Mr. McDonald was extremely resourceful and had painstakingly done research over the years to provide us with great insights on hidden market indicators and insights on the ECB and Eurozone, US Elections 2012, Federal Reserve Policy and the Fiscal Cliff and systemic risk indicators in the world as we know it today. The conference is only one amongst several important ones organized annually by the Radius Financial Education Group.
