On the opening day of third test match, Gary Ballance continued to enjoy the Indian attack with another Test century while skipper Alastair Cook made a welcome return to form as the two made the most of England’s decision to bat with a total of 247 for 2 till the day’s close at Southampton.

Cook (95), who got another chance at 15 when Ravindra Jadeja dropped him in the slip cordon, made the most of his second life while Ballance continued to send the Indians chasing the ball to the boundary with regularity, bringing up his third Test ton in 189 balls.

India sorely missed their hero of Lord’s victory, Ishant Sharma, who was ruled out due to an ankle injury on a day that saw Indians picking up just two wickets during the whole day. Pankaj Singh was awarded a Test debut but was the unlucky bowler when Jadeja dropped Cook. He ended with figures of 0 for 62.

Mohammad Shami (1 for 62) and Jadeja (1 for 34) were the two wicket-takers of the day for the visitors; however, Shami proved his brilliance among the Indian pacers while he did manage to provide the first breakthrough by dismissing opener Sam Robson, caught in the slips by Jadeja for 26.

At stumps, Ballance remained unbeaten at 104, with Ian Bell at the other end on 16.
