South Sudanese Students In Uganda Await Education Cash

The South Sudan Students Union in Uganda (SSSU-U) president James Mayar. [Gurtong/ Juma John Stephen]The over 1,000 students studying in various Ugandan universities and colleges had been promised financial support to cover their education.

The South Sudan Students Union in Uganda (SSSU-U) on Saturday convened a meeting to discuss the issue.

“I want to assure you that President Salva Kiir Mayardit has already approved the disbursement of the funds. However, it is the disbursement that is taking time”, said the Union’s President James Mayar.

He added that he has been in constant touch with government officials in Juba, but whom he said are sluggish.

“I have informed the students that the deadline for the moneys to be received in Kampala is Sunday while those going for internship should wait for Wednesday”, he said.

He said the South Sudanese student population in Uganda has immensely increased following the indefinite closure of the University of Juba.

“We have a humanitarian crisis after the closure of the University of Juba, the return of our people from Khartoum and some from Kenya. We now have so many South Sudanese students who need support”, he said.
