The ability to find, store and create information is a key trait of modern operations and this important function is coordinated by the theatre information management cell.

The Theatre Information Management Cell is responsible for the integration of software and applications from task groups deployed throughout the Middle East Region (MER).

Their current project focuses on rolling out a new file sharing system on the protected and secret networks, to ensure deployed members have the information they need now and in the future and their work ensures that commanders receive accurate and timely information, which aids their decision making process.

Theatre information manager Captain Tegan Davey said it was a career highlight to be on her first deployment in the Middle East, working for JTF633.

“My team is responsible for looking after the information in the MER, implementing the new Share Point system and looking after G Drive and network access,” she said.

“The biggest challenge with implementing the new system is educating users, as members deploy with the expectation that the way they manage electronic information at home is the way it is done in an operational theatre.

We conduct training and brief members as they enter the operational environment, so it’s just a matter of the user understanding the operational information management system and with a bit of patience, they will soon love it,” Captain Davey said.

Captain Davey said that the operations in the MER had been conducted for over 13 years and locating that past information was getting harder.

“It is important that we maintain our records in such a way that will ensure people, say, 30 years from now can find it,” she said.

“Getting this archival process right now will make things easier for future defence inquiries, DVA claims and military historians.”

Operation ACCORDION’s mission is to support the sustainment of Australian Defence Force operations, enable contingency planning and enhance regional relationships in the Middle East Region.

Around 400 ADF personnel work under Operation ACCORDION providing support to Operations SLIPPER and MANITOU at Australia’s main logistics base in the MER.
