Cynthia Elaine Thomas charged in the beating death of elderly Winnipeg woman

On Monday, May 16th, 2011, at approximately 9:00 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to the area of the 700 block of Wellington Avenue for a report of a female being assaulted.

Upon arrival officers located a 61 year old female suffering from upper body injuries. Paramedics transported the female to the hospital in critical condition.

The investigation has revealed that the victim was walking in the area near Wellington Avenue and Simcoe Street when she encountered a female and a male who were known to her. An altercation occurred and the suspect female threw the victim to the ground causing her to strike her head. Once on the ground the suspect then began to assault the victim, however this was interrupted by the male.

At approximately 3:00 p.m. investigators were notified the victim had succumbed to her injuries.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with this investigation resulting in the suspect female being identified.

On May 16th, 2011 at approximately 7:40 p.m., patrolling Division 11 Members observed the suspect walking in the area of Wellington Avenue and Victor Street, where she was taken into custody without incident.

Cynthia Elaine THOMAS, 35 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for her alleged involvement in this incident:

– Manslaughter – not involving Firearm
– Fail to Comply with Condition Recognizance

She has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
