Conservatives finally came clean about the unlawful campaign advertising practices they carried out in 2006, which eventually made Stephen Harper the Prime Minister of Canada. In turn, the Conservative Fund of Canada was fined $52,000 for surpassing the national advertising expenditure limits.

“Every single Conservative accused of wrongdoing has been cleared today,” said spokesman Fred DeLorey, in a written statement afterwards.

Liberal Leader Bob Rae was furious at Conservative’s confession and called it an accounting scam. He also said that these illegal activities helped Harper to buy the election, whereas NDP interim Leader Nycole Turmel urged Harper to make a public apology and explain himself.

Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre said: “We acknowledge there were some administrative mistakes and we are paying for those through a modest fine… The practice in which we engaged in was legal and ethical.”

NDP MP Jack Harris called the Conservative explanation a rather laughable revision of the facts. He said: “They pleaded guilty to spending more than they are entitled to spend and … they also pleaded guilty to filing false claims. So how that can be a victory I don’t know.”
