New Brunswick emergency officials have urged residents, who are still facing power outage due to this week’s extremely icy storm, to ensure safety when trying to keep their home warm and otherwise. According to the officials, power restoration is continuously underway it is not possible for NB Power to provide a complete restoration time for the entire province. Reports claim that over 130,000 NB Power customers were impacted with power outage at one point.

Observing that many residents have still not had their power restored yet, Sussex Fire Chief Harold Lowe explained that people should be careful when heating their homes. He urged residents that “don’t bring in barbeques, [and] don’t bring in outside heaters that aren’t supposed to be inside to be used.” Additionally, Lowe pointed out that he’s seen people use a generator inside in the past, but it’s something people shouldn’t do because it can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide. According to Lowe, “they were running to get power to their fridge so their food would stay good” and “they were fired up and they weren’t thinking.”

Meanwhile, the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) has also strongly recommended people to take advantage of warming centres in various areas of the province. EMO Director Greg MacCallum mentioned that “we call them warming centres and they are that, but it’s also a place someone can go not just to get warm but to charge up their iPhones, to charge up any other electronic devices they feel they need to.”
