Harper government shows interest in discussing free trade with Thailand between the two countries. Prime Minister Stephen Harper is visiting Asia with several agendas including attending a nuclear summit in Seoul and discussing the problem of illegal human smuggling with Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra.

“We are now embarking on a new and exciting era in our relations,” Harper said. “The commitments we are making on this trip lead us to being much closer partners, economic partners, security partners, and of course social and cultural partners for decades to come.

“This will be yet another part of Canada’s ambitious trade agenda. As part of our economic action plan, we are positioning Canada for a stronger role in the world with trade patterns shifting. “

He said Thailand is quickly industrializing with 65 million consumers and Canadian businesses are already flourishing, mostly in the field of IT, agriculture and clean technology. He acknowledged that Canada has rapidly turned into an investment destination of choice for Thai businesses.

Canada’s foreign affairs and trade ministers and a number of business executives accompanied PM Harper on his mission to strengthen relations with Southeast Asian economy.

Yingluck said: “Thailand also looks forward to welcoming Canadian investors to our electronics, machinery, automobile and information technology industry as well as cooperation on alternative and clean energy, environmental protection and biotechnology.”
