The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has announced that it will add a third area code to the 905 region to avoid a telephone number shortage.

The Canadian Numbering Administration warned recently that the region stretching from Niagara Falls to Durham region may run out of telephone numbers by 2014, according to a Canadian News Wire press release. This prompted the CRTC to add a third area code to the region: 365.

On Tuesday, the CRTC announced that it will add a third area code to the 905 region in order to avoid the telephone number shortage in the area, which is the first time that a Canadian region will have three area codes.

As of March 25, 2013, 365 will be added as an area code, which will join area codes 905 and 289.
