The Finance Minister of Canada, Jim Flaherty, declined any speculations about him giving up his chair next year, by sharing on Friday that he intends to keep his job at least until the federal budget is balanced, i.e. a target not achievable before 2015. 62-years-old Flaherty has been in the chair of Finance Minister since 2006, which makes him the most long-serving cabinet minister in the Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Responding to the queries of the media personalities, Flaherty mentioned that “we have a long-term economic plan… I intend to see my way through to the end until we are balanced, and as you know it will be in the medium term, during the course of this Parliament. So I intend to stay.” Rumors about Flaherty’s resignation were resurfacing in the capital recently as The National Post newspaper published this week that the departure of Bank of Canada Governor, Mark Carney, to head the Bank of England may have made Flaherty chose to resign after delivering the next budget in early 2013. The spokesperson of Jim Flaherty, Chisholm Pothier, reported to a newspaper that the minister is “not going anywhere.”

Flaherty and Harper seem very convinced and confident to eliminate the country’s deficit until the end of the current session of Parliament, i.e. 2015. Flaherty’s unambiguous statement illustrates that he has no intention of resigning from his position at least until the next election scheduled for October of 2015. Flaherty, a reputed Princeton graduate and lawyer, is among the most prominent politicians in Ottawa.
