The national chief of Assembly of First Nations, Shawn Atleo, made an abrupt announcement today on the organizations’ website, declaring that his doctor has compelled him to take a leave from work. Atleo has been extremely busy and much frustrated for the past whole week while negotiating between the federal Harper government and chiefs of his own organization.

The announcement mentioned that Atleo will be taking a “brief” break, meanwhile Roger Augustine, a regional chief from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, will be hosting the group’s national executive meetings during his leave. Regional Chief of Saskatchewan, Perry Bellegarde, and Regional Chief of British Columbia, Jody Wilson-Raybould, are declared by Atleo to take a leading position on treaty implementation and comprehensive claims. Atleo alleged that last two weeks have been extremely hectic for him, as he was overly busy in long conference calls, late-night meetings and “frustrations.”

The statement  mentioned Atleo declaring that “this weekend, my doctor ordered that I take some time now to rest and recover, and I have agreed with my family that I do this now.” It also further added that “I will see you all very soon and will return re-invigorated and strengthened to work with you to drive this change together with all of you.” The chiefs of AFN were divided on the verdict of attending this Friday’s meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper without the presence of Gov. Gen. David Johnston. Some of the Chiefs, including Chief of Manitoba and Ontario, completely boycotted the meeting, while also hinting towards filing a non-confidence vote in Atleo.
