Shortly after 3:30 p.m., officers were on foot at the intersection of East 41st Avenue and Clarendon Street dealing with a minor domestic incident.
An unrelated man walked up to them and one of the officers asked him if he needed help.
It was then that the officer noticed the man was carrying a small knife and as the two constables tried to calm the man, he lunged and tried to strike one of them.
The officers moved away and pulled out their firearms, giving verbal commands to drop the knife as they held the man at bay.
He refused to comply with the commands. Another officer arrived and deployed his taser, which failed to disable him. He did, however, drop the knife, and officers were able to safely take him into custody.
Quoc Tuan Nguyen, a 38 year old Surrey resident, is charged with one count of assaulting a peace officer and one count of assault with a weapon.
He is known to police.
He was to appear in court this morning at 9:30 a.m.
