Indonesian authorities have held two Canadian teachers in detention for questioning in connection with a child sexual assault case. However, Jakarta police has announced former Calgary teacher, 45-year-old Neil Bantleman, and his Indonesian colleague and teaching assistant, Ferdinand Tijong, as one of the suspects in a case involving the alleged sexual abuse of three young students at Jakarta International School (JIS), where Bantleman worked as an administrator.

A former teacher at Webber Academy in Calgary, Bantleman, was taken in custody on July 14 for mere questioning and hasn’t been either charged or released as yet. Neil’s elder brother, Guy Bantleman, explained that he has been held for 20 days without charges and that can also be extended another 20 days. Speaking to reporters in Ontario on Monday, he alleged that “it’s quite heart-wrenching at times,” because “he will be found innocent, but at the end of the day, there’s still the ramifications of the allegations.”

While visiting him on Monday, Bantleman’s wife who also works at JIS, Tracy, stressed that she has no doubt about her husband’s innocence. She alleged that “I know my husband, I know he’s innocent, and the absolute same goes for Ferdi (Tjiong).” Another Canadian from Kingston, Ont., who works as a pre-school teacher at the JIS, Allan Dee, is detained in Jakarta for questioning. According to Dee’s family, although he isn’t considered a suspect, he is still stuck in the country until the end of the investigation, which could last months.
