Renowned naturopathic doctor, 42-year-old Kali Simmonds, has publicly acknowledged to be giving serious thought to running for leadership of the Liberal Party of P.E.I. Charlottetown resident, Simmonds, reveled on Friday to have discussed with her husband, Pat, the prospect of tackling a time-consuming leadership campaign. She said that “I have been thinking about it a lot” and “I have not made a firm decision…we (she and Pat) are very much on the fence.”

Earlier Simmonds also considered running for a seat as an MLA in the 2007 provincial election, though she chose not to. Now, Simmonds is considering to run for the top job of Liberal leader and possibly the premier of the province. In her remarks, Simmonds explained that she gained interest in the job from her desire to be able to provide positive, strong direction on health, education and other pressing issues. She mentioned that “the draw for me would definitely be (addressing) the state of our health, what is going to be happening in the future with health care.”

Additionally, Simmonds revealed that Friday’s announced by former UPEI president, Wade MacLauchlan, to run for the same job does not deters her decision. She said “I just think I have something to offer there,” adding that “It’s just a matter of whether it is good timing.” Simmonds has an experience of practicing privately as a licensed naturopathic doctor for almost 15 years. She is the owner of two health food stores called The Root Cellar.
