The Canadian Armed Forces have once again revealed during a press briefing that its soldiers had to engage in two more gunfights with Islamic State militants in the past week, i.e. when they had first such clash. In its response to the news, the Official Opposition announced on Monday to request an emergency debate in the House indicating that its concerns about mission are rising up.

The announcement was made during a routine Operation IMPACT briefing on Monday, when Cpt. Paul Forget explained that 69 Special Forces soldiers on the ground in Iraq evaded firefights, but had to return fire since they were shot at. He stated that the soldiers, “acting in self-defence, effectively returned fire, neutralizing the threat,” while also confirming that there were no injuries from either fight. Furthermore, Cpt.  Forget stressed in his remarks that “we’re now able to get into a little bit more of a tactical battlefield doctrine management type of atmosphere.”

Cpt. Forget alleged that the rules of engagement have not changed since special operations forces came to Iraq in September. He stated that “I don’t think I would characterize that as the new norm, but rather as more of — a bit of a state of evolution of our role in the advise and assist capacity.” He also revealed that the Canadian soldiers are now teaching their Iraqi counterparts more than “the basics of warfare.”
