Brampton Police confirmed the news of a father drowning at a lake in Brampton on Saturday in order to rescue one of his daughters who jumped into the water. The 40-year-old man was at Professor’s Lake, near Torbram Dr. and Bovaird Dr. E., with his two daughters, 5 and 10, when the incident took place at approximately 11:45 a.m.

Peel Regional Police Const., Thomas Ruttan, stated that “they waded out from the shore to play on some rocks in an area of the lake that is not designated for swimming and one of the young girls slipped into the water.” The father responded quickly and jumped in water to climb his daughter out to safety, but then he disappeared beneath the water. Ruttan added that “there were witnesses who saw him go under,” adding that some bystanders even dove into the water and looked for the girls’ father but were unable to locate him.

Ruttan pointed out that although the man-made lake was once a gravel pit, it is only shallow up to the rocks but then “it drops off quite dramatically.” Soon after the incident, emergency crews arrived at the scene and searched unsuccessfully along the surface of the lake from their rescue boats. Although the search was briefly delayed due to lightning, a police dive team ultimately recovered the man’s lifeless body late in the afternoon. Ruttan alleged that “it’s just so tragic,” adding that “and completely avoidable.”
