New Labour architect Peter Mandelson has become the latest member of the party to warn its members against voting for Jeremy Corbyn in the leadership race as he said it could be the ‘final chapter’ for the party. Mandelson is often credited for his role in forming Labour’s pro-business approach under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. He cautioned that the policies presented by the radical left-winger should make him ‘unelectable’.

The remarks made by Mandelson were perhaps a timely response to an article published by Mr Corbyn, which attempts to suppress the ‘hysteria’ around his campaign and presents his vision to help people feel ‘secure’ at work and at home. Mandelson’s reply to the article criticizes Corbyn’s policies of printing money, state ownership of major industries, unilateral disarmament and leaving or restricting the role of Nato.

Mr. Mandelson stated that “that would be a very bad outcome for anyone who cares about fairness in our society or Britain’s place in the world. For those of us who have once before trodden the road of rebuilding Labour, it would also be a poignant one,” adding that “the Corbyn insurgency owes little to what a potential majority of voters think or want. It is fuelled by a mixture of idealism, frustration, naivety and trade union bank balances.” Mr. Mandelson pointed out that the Labour party was routed back to power by a “new generation of Labour reformers” and now “our party is in mortal danger, we need to save it again.”
