Scots are voting on a historic day for Scotland to determine whether the country should remain part of the United Kingdom or end the 307-year-old union to have a new beginning as an independent nation.

According to the Electoral Commission, the turnout is likely to be high as around 4.29m, or 97 per cent of the electorate, have registered to vote – the largest electorate Scotland has ever seen. The 16- and 17-year-olds across the country are also allowed to participate for the first time.

The Polling stations had opened at 7am till 10pm and people have full fifteen hours to cast their precious vote that will decide the future of Scotland.

It has been reported that people made queues in the leafy west end of Glasgow outside polling stations even before 7am.

There are 5,579 polling stations set up in Scotland, which implies typically having no more than 800 voters allocated to each with the aim to avoid large queues.

The result of the referendum is expected to be announced early on Friday, with many opinion polls suggesting a tough competition between ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ campaigns.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has said outside his Aberdeenshire constituency: “Obviously there’s a great deal of anticipation, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it’s a day that everybody will remember.

“We’re in the hands of the people of Scotland and there’s no safer place to be than in the hands of the Scottish people.”

Better Together leader Alistair Darling had also stated as he arrived at the Church Hill Theatre in Edinburgh to cast his vote: “I’m feeling very confident. It’s been a long, hard two-and-a-half year campaign, passions have been aroused on both sides, and understandably so because we are talking about the biggest single decision that any of us will ever take in our lifetime.”
