Jury panel in the sex and indecent assault trial of former BBC DJ Dave Lee Travis have been told they can give majority verdicts.
The ex-Top of the Pops host had been accused of indecently assaulting two women, and sexually assaulting a third. However, he denies all the allegations against him.
In three days of deliberations at Southwark Crown Court, the jury remained unable to reach a unanimous decision.
Judge Anthony Leonard made the direction on the third day to the panel of six men and six women permission to return a majority verdict, where at least ten of them agree, saying: “The time has now come where I can accept a verdict on which not all of you agree, but on which 10 can agree.”
However, he has urged the panel: “Try and reach a verdict on which you all agree.”
The 69-year-old DJ, whose real name is David Griffin, is being retried on two of the counts including one count of indecent assault on a woman between 1990 and 1991 and one of sexual assault in 2008, after a jury failed to reach a verdict during an earlier trial in February.
The third count of indecent assault relates to an additional accusation from another complainant who used to work on the BBC’s Mrs Merton Show, that allegedly took place on 17 January, 1995.
Prosecutors called Mr Travis an “opportunist”, whereas the defence lawyer Stephen Vullo QC told defence witnesses had described him as a “perfect gentleman”.
Judge Leonard had also instructed the jury panel during last week to ignore the media attention around the case and allegations about other celebrities and deal with it like any other trial.
The jury is due to continue its deliberations on Tuesday.
