Several families in Bihar cried over the unfortunate deaths of their beloved school going children on Wednesday. The death toll due to the consumption of poisonous midday meal at a government primary school has risen to 22.

Officials at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) reported that 16 children aged below 10 years died in Chhapra while four others passed away late last night. Media reports confirmed the death of two more this morning.

Children of the female chiefs of midday meal project – Panno Devi and Manju Devi – are also suffering through the same outbreak. Among the dead were two children of Panno while Manju is still praying for her kids who are receiving treatment at PMCH. Superintendent of PMCH Amarkant Jha Azad confirmed that the ailing children are receiving complete medical care as senior doctors are attending to them round-the-clock.

The tragedy was followed by violent protests in the district. Hundreds of people armed with sticks and rods set blaze a bus and damaged public property. The Opposition is blaming the Nitish Kumar government for the incident. BJP officials have termed Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar as insensitive.

“Instead of showing promptness in evacuating the children to a better medical facility, the chief minister of Bihar has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs.2 lakh for kin of children who died after having a mid-day meal. This shows his insensitivity and callous attitude,” said Rajiv Pratap Rudy, spokesperson of BJP.
