The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor Lieutenant General (retired) Zameer Uddin Shah made a controversial statement about girls using the library and denied them access to the books. This gathered a much hyped media attention and the chancellor was forced to take his words back. Furthermore the government this Wednesday, asked the chancellor to give an explanation over the controversial comments made.

Earlier, Shah had given an absurd reason for the denying girls access to the Maulana Azad library. He was quoted as saying that the “boys will flood the library if girls are allowed and there isn’t enough space.” On Tuesday the Lieytenant General (retd.) said in his defence that he had been misquoted and that the university makes sure that they are providing equal rights and opportunities to the women students of the university. He said the only problem was of space and security. “We have nothing against girls, it is not that we are sexist or are discriminating against girls. But there is problem of space, of security. And the books are, after all, available to the girls. You just go online, click a button, and it is delivered next day,” Shah said.

According to DNA, he had further said that women already have access to the library, adding that he had made no statements about male students bothering them. He also noted that till the Maulana Azad library is expanded, it cannot accommodate any more students.
