The Voice of Russia reported today:

Egypt should prepare for a war with Israel, the Suez Canal is needed to be closed and gas deliveries from Egypt to Israel seized, Mohamed Ghanem, one of the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt said in an interview to the English-language Al-Alam news agency.

Unfortunately Al-Alam’s English web site is currently off-line so this can’t be confirmed.

The Guardian writes:

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood is playing a canny political game – and its objective – let no one doubt this – is to take power.

The Wall Street Journal states that the government given the Brotherhood an offer to hold talks with the objective of ending the 10 days of protests. Gamal Hishmat, one of the group’s leaders was reported to have said in a brief interview, "We have repeatedly said no dialogue with the current regime until Mubarak steps down. This remains our stance."

Who is this group?
According to Wikipedia:
The Society of the Muslim Brothers is an Islamist transnational movement and the largest political opposition organization in many Arab states. The group is the world’s oldest and largest Islamic political group, and the "world’s most influential Islamist movement." It was founded in 1928 in Egypt by the Islamic scholar and Sufi schoolteacher Hassan al-Banna.

The group is banned in Egypt but members circumvent the ban by running as independents.

The group apparently hates Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda hates it. The Brotherhood has supposed renounced violence and does not believe it is at war with the West.

Should we be afraid?
Good question. Even though the Brotherhood has been banned in Egypt, they still represent an opposition force. With a change in government, there can be no doubt they are going to be a part of the political landscape. The question is whether they participate or try to take over.

Muslim Brotherhood blames Israel for Egyptian unrest
Mohammed Ghanem one of the Muslim Brotherhood leaders in Egypt called on his country to stop pumping gas to Israel and prepare the Egyptian army to wage war against Israel. In an interview on the Iranian television station al-Alam, Ghanem blamed Israel for supporting President Hosni Mubarak’s regime but warned that neither the Egyptian police nor army will be able to stop the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood is the largest opposition group in the country and criticized Mubarak in the latest parliamentary elections of rigging the votes. While they have not come out vocally in the recent wave of anti-government protests, many believe they are purposely maintain a low profile until the time is right to attempt to take over the government.
