Warner Grand Theatre (San Pedro, CA)
John Williams’ score for Star Wars transformed the landscape of Hollywood film music and became an icon of American culture. Now, more than 30 years and 80 films later, Williams’ melodies remain the soundtrack of a generation. Golden State Pops Orchestra plays favorites from Star Wars, Far and Away, Superman, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Jurassic Park, and his newest work, “Dartmoor, 1912” from the 2012 Academy Award-nominated film War Horse. Cellist Cecilia Tsan joins the orchestra as a special guest to perform “Sayuri’s Theme” from Memoirs of a Geisha. Tsan’s childhood friend Yo Yo Ma played the piece on the original movie soundtrack. In addition, the orchestra’s principal harpist, Alison Bjorkedal, will be featured on two of Williams’ solo works: the haunting “Lanes of Limerick” from Angela’s Ashes, which was performed on the original movie soundtrack by her music teacher, JoAnn Turovsky, and “Two Themes” from Harry Potter.
