Highways Performance Space and Gallery (Santa Monica, CA)
Highways Performance Space’s 4×4 showcases original works from four of the city’s most exciting Latino and Latina artists. Martin Matamoros’ Desert Portraits takes audiences on a personal odyssey to meet the artist’s family deep within the Las Vegas desert, while Eva Montealegre’s Anne Bonny! From the Crow’s Nest uses prose, choreography, music and sound to get inside the head and heart of Bonny, the infamous “people’s pirate.” Brazilian-born artist Leopold Nunan’s Leo from Rio is an energetic blend of live instrumentation, electronic music and athletic dance that takes a nostalgic trip back to the techno clubs of the 1990s. And In Bocca al Lupo uses the work of 1970s Cuban songstress La Lupe — her music, her tumultuous life and her wild stage antics — to explore themes of competition, celebrity, power, vulnerability and authenticity.
