Calgary police have confirmed to have arrested a male suspect, to be charged with murder, in connection with the disappearance of a five-year-old Calgary boy, Nathan O’Brien, and his grandparents, Kathryn and Alvin Liknes. According to the announcement on Monday, even though the bodies of the three family members are not yet found, police have decided to charge the suspect with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of second-degree murder.
In the a press conference held to provide an update on Monday, Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson explained that the first-degree murder charges relate to the Liknes couple and the second-degree murder charge will be laid in connection to Nathan’s death. He said that “the preponderance of evidence is such that it has led our investigators to believe that they are dead.” However, he refused to reveal the identity of the suspect until charges were formally laid, which he said is anticipated to happen sometime Monday afternoon.
Hanson confessed that the investigation was overly “painstaking.” He elucidated that it involved “meticulous” searches of a rural property near Airdrie, Alta., and two municipal landfills. He added that police received more than 900 tips that it had to consider. He said that “this file has been built piece by piece by piece.” Nathan and his grandparents went missing two weeks ago and until recently, police had reason to believe that at least one of them was being kept alive somewhere.
