“If given a chance, I’d put back Aamir Khan’s cradle sequence for which he cried and fought with me in Raja Hindustani. I had to cut it because of length,” said Dharmesh Darshan as he spoke exclusively to Bollywood Hungama’s Content Head Broadband Faridoon Shahryar on his blockbuster film Raja Hindustani completing 20 years on November 15. “It was a brilliant 15 minute scene when Aamir Khan comes to know that the child is there. He goes in the house and the child is not there as Karisma had taken the child to see a doctor. He cries. Archana Puran Singh, Pramod Moutho and Mohnish Bahl get him beaten up, throw him out of the house and tell him that Karisma doesn’t want him. He did it very, very well. That is when Aamir Khan gets aggressive and kidnaps the child. I went to meet Aamir Khan in Film City at night to inform that the length was an issue and the producer wants it cut. He requested to retain, but, I couldn’t. If that sequence would have been retained, Aamir Khan could have won a National Award for his performance,” Dharmesh said.

In a seventy minute conversation, the soft spoken and extremely cultured Dharmesh Darshan poured his heart out on Raja Hindustani which is one of the biggest hits in the Indian film industry. He revealed how he spoke to Aamir Khan before the start of the film about rumours of his interference and how Aamir Khan told him to follow his instinct and that he will follow him. Dharmesh Darshan spoke about the exemplary performance of Karisma Kapoor, the spellbinding music score of Nadeem Shravan, how he had told Mala Sinha’s daughter Pratibha Sinha that ‘Pardesi Pardesi’ will be her biggest success and it came true and the stellar performance of the support cast including Kunal Khemu, Navneet Nishan, Archana Puran Singh, Suresh Oberoi etc… Dharmesh Darshan also spoke about the epic kissing sequence between Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor for which he worked hard on ensuring high aesthetic value and they ended up getting a ‘U’ certificate for the film. And that too in 1996!
