Aamir Khan who also goes by the name, Mr. Perfectionist, turns 53 today and it is like the man has found an evergreen mantra to stay relevant in today’s age by not just the movies he chooses to do but also with the way he connects to his fans. Aamir’s bastion is mostly urbane, educated youngsters who do not take nonsense or tolerate mediocrity in form of entertainment. They are far away from mere idol worship and only lap up films which are high on quality and content. One cannot hoodwink Aamir’s fans. More often than not, a superstar’s image is determined by the kind of clout he has. While Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan’s fan base includes the aam junta, Aamir has always marked his territory well and has made it clear, through his overall on and off screen persona, in no uncertain terms that his target audience is intelligent and ‘woke’.

Aamir Khan Special – Decoding the success mantra of Bollywood’s Not-So-Secret Superstar

In his career spanning more than three decades, Aamir Khan has taken many risks but delivered every time, with a few exceptions. To put it simply, the birthday boy has made sure that he gives one memorable film every year consistently to enrich not just Bollywood but Indian cinema on the whole. So, it is not an exaggeration that Aamir’s films make Bollywood look a little better. His films prove that we are not just about big fat Punjabi weddings, expensive dance numbers and rampant sexism — though he has dabbled in all this with mass entertainment outings like Dhoom 3, among others. But more often than not, Khan is one actor who genuinely cares about his craft and director’s vision. He eats, breathes, feels and lives the movies he make and every single project he undertakes has that unmistakable Aamir Khan touch.

While the other two superstars of his generation are scratching their heads to sustain their top positions at the box office and in the psyche of their fans, Aamir has cracked a formula of sorts to do all this with every film he stars in or even produces. But again, this method is very unique to this superstar who pulls off a new trick with every film from his magic bag. The films that he has done over last decade, has his patent all over it because no actor with the popularity and stature of a superstar can ever pull something like this off ever. Here are some of the unforgettable roles of Aamir Khan which will stay unique only to him.

Shakti Kumaarr – Secret Superstar

An incorrigible, shallow flirt with the heart of gold, is a short description for Aamir’s this character from his last release Secret Superstar. The movie is taking moolah at China Box Office after doing awesome domestic business. It requires special guts to pull off a role like Shakti because this character will make you cringe at the first sight and then you slowly, albeit grudgingly warm up to him.

Mahavir Singh Phogat – Dangal

By far one of the most challenging of all roles the superstar has attempted, Aamir’s Mahavir Singh Phogat is steadfast, earnest, determined and stubborn. Dangal is one of the highest grossers in Bollywood and there is no film to have beaten its record till now but did you know, Aamir was very scared to do this role because the character’s age was too close to his real age. He was 52 playing a 56 year old. Also, he went through a crazy body transformation for the role. Aamir gained up to 95 kilograms and later reduced to 70 kilograms.

Title role – PK

PK can be chronicled as Aamir Khan’s one of the career best performances. The superstar did not leave any stone unturned to showcase his world class acting chops to us. From going butt naked to wearing mis-matched outfits to portraying himself as a paan chewing Bhojpuri bumpkin in the search of the God…he proved that there is NO one like him when it comes to driving the message home using quirky themes by making use of intelligent cinema.

Bhuvan – Lagaan

Aamir Khan chose a first time director Ashutosh Gowarikar to tell a quasi-historical tale going back to British colonisation and subsequent freedom struggle, but with a twist. It was huge gamble for a top star to play a totally de glamorised role of a villager. He went ahead, played an underdog and combined heart thumping jingoism with India’s another passion: Cricket.

Sanjay Singhania – Ghajini

One of his brilliant body transformations, after Dangal, Aamir’s Ghajini sold itself after his fans started going bald after his movie’s look was out. The film, inspired by a South hit, was your typical potboiler but what set it apart was the way Aamir got into his character as he played a short term memory loss patient on hunt of his girlfriend’s killer.

Akash – Dil Chahta Hai

It would be a shame if we did not mention this evergreen cult film which has shaped up the 80s and 90s generation. It was brave of Aamir to take up the film which was being helmed by the first time director Farhan Akhtar and play a typical poor little rich brat, who loves and grows up the hard way.

Rancho – 3 Idiots

How can a 44 year old convincingly play an undergrad college student? Well Aamir did it and oh-so-believably! Did you know? He ate nothing but milk and bananas through the shoot of 3 Idiots and his effort paid off. The movie became the first film to enter Rs 200 crore club.
