Six years after his last box office success Phoonk (2008), Ram Gopal Varma is finally seeing audience rooting for a film of his. His recent release Rowdy (in Telugu) has opened to packed houses in Andhra Pradesh and other neighboring states, hence breaking a continued jinx of non-starters at the box office.
"Between Phoonk and Rowdy, Ramu directed 11 more films but none could turn out to be a box office success. However with Rowdy he has shrugged away that rough patch. The film has enjoyed a good weekend at the box office with decent to good critical acclaim coming in as well. It is after long that a film coming from him hasn't been panned. It is indeed a welcome sign for the filmmaker who could well do with many more successes like this. As they say, form is temporary, class is permanent," says a source.
Though the filmmaker did gain some appreciation for some of his films in the interim period too, a commercial success eluded him. In fact he also directed a couple of Telugu films in the meanwhile (Katha Screenplay Darsakatvam: Appalaraju, Dongala Mutha). When his Satya 2 releases last year to all around poor reviews, it had seemed like death kneel for the filmmaker.
"Instead of sulking, he quickly moved down South and directed Rowdy with veteran actor Mohan Babu and his elder son Vishnu Manchu," the source adds, "He isn't someone who can be bogged down by anyone or anything. He just moves on to his next film."
Apparently, Rowdy is a rehashed version of Amitabh Bachchan's Sarkar, which stays on to be one of the better films by Ram Gopal Varma. With the film turning out to be good news for Varma, he isn't permanently setting his base in Hyderabad, as some had predicted after the debacle of Satya 2.
"That's untrue," says Ramu, "I would soon be beginning work in my Hindi film which deals with the subject of martial arts. There is a lot of pre-production required for the film as there aren't many actors who also know martial arts."
We just hope that his form continues well into Bollywood outings as well.
