Filmmakers critics and actors react to Court being selected for Oscars

Naseeruddin Shah: "Neeraj Ghaywaan's Masaan should also have been a contender. And not the names suggested by you (Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK) …These are typical Bollywood shit. No argument that Court is easily the best film made in India last year. But does it really matter because we are sure as hell it won't win the Oscar. While I hope the film becomes world-renowned, I do fear the producers don't have the money or clout to do an Oscar campaign. This game is not for us I don't know why we even bother with it. Will happily eat my words if Court does win without spending a million dollars."

Shabana Azmi: "It is the right choice. It is a slice of life non-drama, extremely well performed and executed."

Bejoy Nambiar: "I LOVED Court. I think it was one of the best films that came out last year. I completely agree with the choice."

Raja Sen: "I definitely agree with the choice. Court might not have been my favourite Indian film over the last 12 months, but it is an impressive and startling accomplishment that, in many ways, should go a long way in pleasing an international jury. I'd have picked Avinash Arun's Killa, but Court may tick more boxes at the Academy. Good luck to the small, brave film."

Aseem Chabria: "I am big fan of Kaakaa Muttai, one of the sweetest films about childhood to come out from India with two adorable lead actors. But honestly I was blown away by Court – its emotional depth and the scathing look at caste and class in today's India, and a very strong critique of India's judicial system. As a film, as a piece of craft and art form, Court is way stronger than any Indian film made in the recent years. It has also received significant recognition at international film festivals, so it has a good chance of making an impression on the Academy members."
