Congratulating Reverend Dr. Fred Luter Junior on his unopposed election as the President of Southern Baptist Convention (SBC), Hindus hope that he would promote interfaith dialogue in USA and the world.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, hoped that SBC under Reverend Luter would work for promoting interfaith dialogue and cooperating in common causes such as peace, ecological responsibility, social development, human rights, etc., with different religions and denominations. Dialogue brought us mutual enrichment and helped us overcome prejudices passed down to us from previous generations, Zed added.

Rajan Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out: “Religion is a complex component of human life. Dialogue helps us to see interconnections and interdependencies between religions.”

Reverend Luter is the first African-American president of SBC, which was organized in 1845 in Augusta (Georgia, USA). Headquartered in Nashville (Tennessee, USA), it states to have over 16-million members and over 45,000 churches. According to SBC website, “Typically church membership is a matter of receiving Jesus as your Savior and Lord and experiencing believer's baptism by immersion”. Roger L. Spradlin is Chairman of its Executive Committee

Hinduism, oldest and third largest religion of the world, has about one billion adherents and moksh (liberation) is its ultimate goal. There are about three million Hindus in USA.
