Hindus have asked Bulgaria to immediately restore the water supply of "Byalata Prast" Roma (Gypsy) settlement in the northeastern Bulgarian city of Shumen, which was reportedly cut-off.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, urged Bulgaria government to come to the rescue of these poor Roma families with small children who were reportedly already having tough times because of apartheid like conditions they lived in Bulgaria and Europe.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that despite the adoption of National Strategy for Integration of Roma in Bulgaria (2012-2020), anti-Roma sentiment still reportedly prevailed in some quarters of Bulgaria. Bulgaria needed to “wholeheartedly” implement various action plans given in the Roma Integration Strategy. Development of entire Bulgarian society was not complete without the adequate socio-economic progress of its Roma population, Zed said.
Rajan Zed pointed out that Bulgaria should provide equal opportunity and access to Roma like all Bulgarian citizens, which was reportedly drastically lacking at present. Racial discrimination should have no place in 21st century Bulgaria and Europe.
The majority Bulgarian Orthodox Church and other religious groups in Bulgaria should also come to the rescue of maltreated Roma populace helping to protect their human rights and freedoms, as religion told us to help the helpless, Zed stated.
Rajan Zed stressed that Roma upliftment should be the first priority in Bulgaria and Europe as their maltreatment was a dark stain on the face of the continent. It was simply immoral to continue staying apathetic and silent spectator ignoring Roma plight, who reportedly regularly faced social exclusion, racism, substandard education, hostility, joblessness, rampant illness, inadequate housing, lower life expectancy, unrest, living on desperate margins, stereotypes, mistrust, rights violations, discrimination, marginalization, appalling living conditions, prejudice, human rights abuse, etc.
Bulgaria is known for its long sandy Black Sea Coast, multicolored monasteries, footballer Hristo Stoichkov, poet Peyo Yavorov, etc. Rosen Plevneliev and Boyko Borissov are President and Prime Minister respectively of Bulgaria; which boasts of nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Shumen, capital of Shumen Province, is the tenth-largest city in Bulgaria and is home to “Monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria”. Prominent people associated with it include two former prime ministers of Bulgaria— Stoyan Danev and Vasil Drumev, former
