Three South Asian performing artists nominated for Dora Mavor Moore Awards

South Asian performing artists Ravi Jain, Anusree Roy and Natasha Bakht have each been nominated for Dora Mavor Moore Awards, Toronto’s annual awards for outstanding theatre, dance and opera productions across the city.

 

The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) announced the nominations at a press conference June 2. This year, a total of 35 awards will be handed out across six divisions: General Theatre Production, Musical Theatre Production, Opera, Independent Theatre Production, Theatre for Young Audiences and Dance.

 

Actor, director and founder of Why Not Theatre Ravi Jain is nominated for Outstanding New Play or Musical (Independent Theatre Division), Outstanding Performance in a Featured Role/Ensemble (Independent Theatre Division) and Outstanding Production (Independent Theatre Division) for Spent, a play he starred in, co-wrote and co-produced with Adam Paolozza, Michele Smith and Dean Gilmour.

 

Writer/Actress Anusree Roy is nominated for Outstanding New Play (General Theatre Division) and Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principal Role (General Theatre Division) for her one-woman show, Letters to my Grandma.

 

Dancer Natasha Bakht is nominated for Outstanding Choreography (Dance Division) for Dafeena, part of the Royal Ontario Museum‘s Museum Dances.

 

Winners will be revealed at the Dora awards ceremony on June 28, 2010 at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto, hosted by CBC’s Jian Ghomeshi.
