Hindus have commended Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) for electing first woman executive in its 109-year history.
Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, called election of Burundi’s Lydia Nsekera, 46, to FIFA’s powerful decision-making body a “step in the right direction”. It was long overdue, Zed added.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, stressed that women and men were equal in the eyes of God and women could lead as effectively and as skillfully as men. Moreover, this would inspire more women to play football and improve women’s access to the game.
Rajan Zed further said that discrimination in football should not be acceptable under FIFA whose “promise” was to use “football as a symbol of hope and integration” and which stood for promoting “solidarity, regardless of gender, ethnic background, faith or culture”.
Joseph S. Blatter and Jerome Valcke are President and Secretary General respectively of FIFA, international governing body of football headquartered in Zurich (Switzerland).
