Hindus have supported pop-star Annie Lennox’s call for pop video ratings.
Lennox reportedly recently described the sexualized imagery of pop videos as “pornographic” and “clearly into the realm of porn”.
Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that some of the imagery used in these music videos was disturbing and kids should not be exposed to it. We needed to protect our children, Zed added.
Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, supported the singer’s call of rating the pop videos the same way as movies and establishing clear boundaries on acceptable standards.
Rajan Zed pointed out that risque, explicit and sexualized costumes and performances in many of such videos were not appropriate for all ages of viewers.
This was a powerful medium and it could leave lasting impressions upon the unsuspecting audiences about their value system, especially younger audiences, who were passing through highly impressionable period of their lives, Zed argued.
Rajan Zed further said that religions should be more vigilant to save their devotees from the moral confusion which Hollywood and other entertainment industry created.
